Loughlin over FDA 76-50 in boys basketball

December 12, 2016

Less than 48 hours after its spectacular comeback against Cardinal Hayes fell short, Bishop Loughlin bounced back with a 76-50 win over PSAL A Division powerhouse Frederick Douglass Academy on Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn. Loughlin rested starters Keith Williams and Markquis Nowell, who did not suit up for the game, but Tyrese Gaffney delivered a standout performance to lead the Lions throughout.

FDA held a 14-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter, as senior Travis Cox scored eight of FDA's first quarter points and Gaffney scored six of Loughlin's 12.

After trading baskets in the beginning of the second, Loughlin tied the score at 21 on Chad Venning's bucket in the post at the 4:50 mark, and the Lions took the lead 23-22 on a Richard Springs layup off a brilliant left-handed assist from Gaffney. Loughlin rattled off five straight to make it 28-22, prompting an FDA timeout with 2:52 left. Behind Gaffney, the Lions stretched the lead to 34-26 at the break.

After struggling on the boards against Hayes on Friday night, Loughlin dominated the glass against FDA, especially on the offensive end. The Lions opened the third quarter on an 11-0 run and went up 45-26 on a Jordan Thomas put-back with 4:10 left. Loughlin led 50-32 with less than 1:00 left in the third, but FDA closed the quarter on a 7-0 run consisting of a Cox 3-pointer, a steal and layup by James Blair and another steal and layup by Cox, making it 50-39 heading into the fourth.

Loughlin led 52-41 with 7:02 left when Cox was whistled for a technical after reacting to a blocking foul called on him while defending a Gaffney drive. That put Gaffney on the line for four free throws and he connected on three of them, making it 55-41 Loughlin. Another basket by the Lions and a 3-pointer by Adrien Nunez pushed the Loughlin lead to 60-43 with 5:55 left. A Thomas put-back with 4:15 left made it 65-44 Loughlin, putting the game out of reach.

Gaffney had a game-high 21 points and Venning had 10 points for Loughlin. Cox had 18 for FDA.
