Ravens Roll in 84-64 win over Hayes

December 7, 2019

Malachi Smith and Gary Grant sparked a second half rally for St. Raymond, as the Ravens rolled past Cardinal Hayes 84-64 on Friday in a rematch of last year's CHSAA Archdiocesan championship game. While the Ravens' defense kept Hayes out of synch on offense for most of the game, the full-court pressure was especially effective in the second half, as Cardinal turnovers started to accumulate, leading to transition baskets for St. Raymond, including several crowd-pleasing dunks by Grant.

Hayes hung tough early, tying the score at 15 on a dunk by Shemani Fuller and taking a 17-15 lead on a banker by Tobe Awaka. The Ravens answered by scoring the next 10, pulling ahead 25-17 after a dunk by Luis Kortright with 7:04 to play in the half. St. Raymond held a 38-30 lead at the break after a 3-pointer by Dallis Dillard and a layup by Kortright, and the Ravens scored the first four points of the third quarter to stretch the margin to 42-30.

Grant's dunk with 6:38 left in the third put the Ravens ahead 47-32, and the lead swelled to 53-36 after a 4-point play by Smith at the 5:18 mark. St. Raymond cruised the rest of the way.

The Ravens are now 2-0 on the young season and will host St. Peter's on Sunday.

Hayes falls to 1-1 and will host St. Dominic (LI) on Tuesday.
