Japheth Chambers had 18 points and Dante Pulido had 12 points to lead Nazareth to a 37-35 win over Xavier in the quarterfinals of the CHSAA A Division basketball playoffs in Queens on Saturday. Nazareth trailed 23-14 at the half and 29-24 at the end of the third before rallying in the fourth, sparked by Chambers and Pulido. Chambers converted a conventional 3-point play in the lane to cut Xavier's lead to 33-31 with 5:10 left to play and his 3-pointer from the corner with 4:30 left put Nazareth ahead 34-33. Xavier went back in front 35-34 on Malik Fisher's basket in the lane with 4:08 left, but Fisher's next bucket with 3:24 on the clock was waived off when he was whistled for an offensive foul. Nazareth tied the score at 35 on Michael Pollard Jr.'s free throw with 1:26 left and Pulido's driving score with 30 ticks remaining gave Nazareth a 37-35 lead. The Kingsmen stopped Xavier on the next two possessions, one of which came on a missed baseline jumper by Noel Karameros that rolled in and out, sealing the victory and earning them a berth in the CHSAA A Division semifinals, where they will face top-seeded Kennedy Catholic on Tuesday. Douglass Stapler had 13 points for Xavier.
