Clive Allen had 18 points and Baron Goodridge had 15 points to lead Cardinal Hayes to a 64-63 win over Archbishop Stepinac in an overtime thriller at the NY Archdiocesan semifinals on Tuesday night. Stepinac put itself in a position to pull off the upset and get to the final, but they failed to close it out, giving top-seeded Hayes the title shot against St. Raymond on Saturday. In a back-and-forth bout throughout, Hayes led 16-13 at the end of the first before Stepinac came back to take a 35-31 lead at the half on Eduard Minaya's buzzer-beating 3-pointer. Hayes went ahead again 48-44 at the end of the third, but Stepinac countered with a rally and found themselves with a 56-54 lead and the ball with 58.6 ticks left in the fourth. After Stepinac turned the ball over on a miscue, they dodged a bullet when a 3-point attempt by Allen went in-and-out. After calling timeout, Stepinac turned the ball over again, but this time the mistake cost them, as Allen drove to the basket and put a perfect pass in the lap of Victor Montenegro, who converted the layup to tie the score at 56 in the closing seconds, sending the game into overtime. Montenegro's basket off of an up-and-under move put Hayes ahead 64-60 with 1:38 left in OT, but Payton Hudson's 3-pointer cut the lead to 64-63 with 52 seconds left. After Allen missed the front end of a one-and-one, Jorden Means found Aundre Hyatt on a cut to the hoop, but Hyatt's shot from close range rolled out. Stepinac had yet another chance after Goodridge missed another front end for Hayes, but Means' shot off a dribble drive fell short, dashing Stepinac's hopes for the upset. Jordan Tucker had a game-high 20 points for Stepinac.
