Nick Corbett had a game-high 25 points, including six 3-pointers, and Andrew Ballou had 20 points to lead Monsignor Farrell to an impressive 59-46 win over top-seeded Kennedy Catholic in the CHSAA A Division basketball Championship Game at Fordham University on Friday night. Corbett was 6-9 from 3-point range, made 7 of 7 free throws and had five steals, as the Lions handed Kennedy Catholic its first and only CHSAA league loss of the season.
Corbett made five of his six 3-pointers in the first half, as Farrell held a 26-19 lead at the intermission. Malachi de Sousa's basket with 2:48 left in the third cut the deficit to 30-25, but Corbett answered with another 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, pushing Farrell's lead to 33-25. After Nick Igneri's 3-pointer extended Farrell's lead to 38-25, Kennedy Catholic went on a 5-0 run to make it 38-30, but Jordan Wright fouled Corbett in the act from 3-point range as the buzzer sounded at the end of the third. The foul proved costly, as Corbett drained all three free throws to give Farrell a 41-30 lead and thwart Kennedy Catholic's momentum heading into the fourth. The Lions closed the game out by outscoring Kennedy Catholic 18-16 in the final quarter, giving Farrell its first CHSAA title in the school's history. Farrell's defense was also a big story in this game, as Kennedy Catholic was 13-41 from the field and had 19 turnovers.
