Iona Prep jumped out to an 8-0 lead and cruised to a 55-35 win over St. Francis Prep in the CHSAA AA boys basketball opener in Queens on Saturday. The Gaels' defense was the story in this game, as they held the Terriers to just 2 points in the first quarter and held a 28-8 advantage at halftime. Iona Prep opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run to stretch the lead to 40-10 before St. Francis Prep responded with a 13-5 run to close the gap to 45-23 at the end of the third.
Souleymane Koureissi had 20 points and Nick Brennan had 10 points for Iona Prep. Jayden Sutton had 11 points for St. Francis Prep. The next game for both teams is Tuesday, when Iona Prep will visit Fordham Prep and St. Francis Prep will host St. Mary's.
