Taylor Aybar had a game-high 25 points, as Monsignor McClancy rolled to a 63-49 win over St. John the Baptist in the CHSAA Girls B State Semifinal in East Elmhurst on Friday night. With a capacity crowd on hand that included a cowbell and Crusader mascot, McClancy thrived on the home court advantage by jumping out to an 8-2 lead, with Aybar scoring six of McClancy's first eight points. St. John the Baptist answered with a 14-4 run of their own, sparked by Bridgette Moran and Emily Meyer, giving the Cougars a 16-12 lead at the end of the first. McClancy roared back in the second, outscoring St. John the Baptist 17-4 behind 8 points from Aybar, 3-pointers from Gina Hopkins and Kaitlyn Stenz and defense that held the Cougars to just one field goal in the frame, giving McClancy a 29-20 edge at halftime. Although McClancy led comfortably throughout the second half, the game was never really out of reach for St. John the Baptist, who cut the deficit to 44-36 early in the fourth before a 3-pointer by Aybar extended McClancy's lead to 47-36 with 6:36 left to play. Despite making just 8 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter, McClancy still outscored St. John the Baptist 19-16, giving the Crusaders the 63-49 win and a berth into the CHSAA B State title game, where they will face Sacred Heart at 1:00 on Saturday at St. John Villa Academy. Moran finished with 17 points for St. John the Baptist.
